caugiran is in san francisco where the president spent the night after a series of fundraisers. reporter: good morning. the president is expected to take off in a few hours and he will be taking with him, yes, extra campaign cash about $2 million closer to his goal of raising $1 billion. he was met at sfo with a warm welcome. by the time he went to his main fundraising event that evening he had already made a million dollars at a smaller event across town then went to a $20,000 a plate dinner party with 100 supporters. after that he had a concert for $6,000 more at bill graham civic auditorium. the president fired up the crowds and told them to get almost obsessive about his re- election. >> so i need you in this election the next 29 days! >> yeah! >> we cannot afford to be complacent! >> reporter: now, this was president obama's sixth visit

to the bay. he wrapped up his last fundraising blitz in california asking donors to send e-mails and make phone calls in key battleground states. frank and michelle, with an election that's probably almost a month away from now, just how tight it is it could be these swing states that could determine the election. in a few hours, both candidates go to ohio. back to you. >> thank you. a big bounce for mitt romney after last week's presidential debate. a pew research survey three weeks ago gave president obama an 8-point lead among likely voters. now romney has taken a four- point lead in an updated survey. romney is capitalizing on his post debate bounce turning the table on the president's attack on his foreign policy knowledge. speaking at the virginia military institute romney called the president's approach to the middle east passive and reactive. he went on to say that he knows

night. the two victims found dead inside their car a block away near 12th street. so far, police have no suspects or motives. hundreds of people turned out in hercules to remember a woman murdered in her home. mourners marched behind the husband and children of susie ko last night as they walked to a vigil. her body was found on friday. her husband had called a neighbor to check on her after she didn't pick him up at the airport. police say she had been stabbed and suffered blunt-force trauma to the head. i was so devastated. i couldn't believe it was really happening. but, of course, it did. >> last homicide we had here was 2010. we have only had 5 homicides in the last 11 years. >> the fbi is assisting in the case because police in hercules do not have all the necessary resources. authorities are hoping to find susie ko's 2011 blue subaru outback with an idaho license plate. a decision likely this afternoon on the fate of ross

mirkarimi. the suspended san francisco sheriff, board of supervisors voting on whether to remove him from office for good. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington in san francisco with more on what's at stake this morning. good morning. reporter: good morning. this is going to be a huge decision because this could set the precedent for misconduct cases in the future. after nine months of hearings at city hall, we might find out today if ross mirkarimi keeps his job or is removed from office. he was elected last fall then suspended without pay by mayor ed lee shortly after being sworn in. he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment related to a domestic violence dispute with his wife. eliana lopez showed a neighbor her bruised arm in this video in when he grabbed her in an argument. he was sentenced to three years' probation, fined and a year of counseling. the mayor claims his guilty plea makes him unfit to hold office. meanwhile mayor lee is facing

his own criticism accused of perjury. he testified he had not spoken to any of the 11 supervisors before suspending mirkarimi. a former board of supervisors candidate said he did seeking advice. those board of supervisors will meet today to discuss those issues and might vote on whether mirkarimi stays or goes for official misconduct. >> we are making already changes and great changes that were in the queue for reform. that should be allowed to continue based on voter will and not let what's an undemocratic process interfere so that there's a consolidation of power. >> these are charges that have been sustained by the ethics commission and the ones that are at the forefront, to make sure we hold high the standards. office of the sheriff in confirming that and i look forward to the board doing the same. >> reporter: that meeting is at 2:00. there will be a 10-minute presentation and nine votes will oust him. in san francisco, elissa harrington, cbs 5. so we would like to know this morning, do you think

[ laughter ] >> i know. no surprise there. >> i had to dust off the doppler this morning. we haven't had to use it for quite a while. it is getting interesting out there. low pressure is swinging off the coastline and check out the doppler. we're seeing rain even a couple of lightning strikes off the coast. it looks like that will continue to spin around kind of skirting the coastline so i think the best chance and it's still only a slight chance of rain is right near the immediate coastline. most of that moisture is going to drag along the coast and southward. so yeah, it looks like things staying a little bit unsettled today. there are a few clouds over the city of san francisco right now. the temperatures not too bad. 40s and 50s at this hour. by the afternoon not going to be a bad day. most of us some partly cloudy

skies and a mix of sun and clouds. so 70s in the valleys, 60s and 70s around the bay, a lot of 60s at the coast. but we are not done with the chance of rain yet. we'll talk more about that in a moment. >> so far roads are dry and quiet cross the bay area. so we don't have any huge hot spots at 4:37 this morning. it's an easy commute into san francisco if you are using some of our bridges. here's a live look at the bay bridge and so far no metering lights obviously no delay behind the pay gates. kind of a similar store very at the san mateo bridge right side of your screen westbound 92, left side of your screen eastbound 92 heading toward hayward and both directions should be about 14 minutes or so between hayward and the peninsula. elsewhere, to our maps, other live cameras, there is some roadwork on the approach to the golden gate bridge from sir francis drake towards the waldo tunnel. you will find it in lanes on southbound 101 leaving rohnert park towards santa rosa. across the deck just a couple of headlights heading towards our camera and the toll plaza so so far, so good heading into

san francisco. similar story in the south bay. a lot of our overnight roadwork should be wrapping up by about 5:00 but in the meantime, southbound 101 approaching tully road caltrans still busy across that stretch. that is your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. california gas prices are the highest in the nation. bay area drivers are fed up as you can imagine. some state leaders are demanding answers. the average gallon of regular gas is $4.74 in san francisco, $4.68 in oakland and $4.67 in san jose. california senator dianne feinstein is calling for a federal investigation. she is citing malicious trading schemes in the california gas market. at the same time, governor brown has given an order to allow higher polluting winter blend gas to be sold in the state. he says he wants to make more fuel available to drive down the price. an energy expert says companies gaming the system is not the main problem. >> 9 problem is we use -- the problem is we use a blend of

continues coastside as we look toward the bay a couple of clouds and the temperatures really rather mild. 60s and mid-70s. so the low remains off the coast spinning up trouble and some unsettled weather over the next couple of days but not really moving onshore until it makes its way into southern california. so just a slight chance of showers the next few days. around the bay area today, you're looking at about 71 in san jose, 70 milpitas, 69 san mateo, east bay temperatures close to mid-70s into fairfield about 73 in brentwood. 70 degrees in danville. inside the bay you will see a few more clouds and some cooler temperatures. 64 degrees san francisco. 62 degrees daly city. next couple of days staying a little unsettled. then maybe a brief break but then another system dives into the bay area come friday to bring at least a slight chance of a few more showers. temperatures warming up toward the latter part of the weekend. elizabeth. >> getting kind of interesting in weather. all right. thanks, lawrence. we'll take you towards our live traffic sensors because we just have your overnight roadwork out the door right now so no huge issues on the

if you an early-morning flight at sfo quick trip from downtown san francisco all the way down towards san bruno. west down 237 this time of the morning nice and light. out of milpitas towards san jose, westbound 580 one of our first spots to slow down so far in the green, 14 minutes coming between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you. in just a few hours, convicted sex offender jerry sandusky is set to learn his fate at a sentencing hearing in a pennsylvania courtroom. the former penn state football coach was found guilty of 45 counts of child sexual abuse back in june. by law, those counts would add up to a minimum of 220 years in prison. despite his conviction, sandusky insisted in an audio statement that he is innocent of all charges. >> "they can take away my life. they can make me out as a monster. they can treat me as a

monster, but they can't take away my heart." >> sandusky also blamed his arrest and conviction on a conspiracy crafted by accusers, investigators and the media. relatives of the former coach are expected to submit letters of support while at least two victims will address sandusky today directly. a ninth person has died in the growing nationwide meningitis outbreak. the latest death was reported last night in nashville, tennessee. cdc says as many as 13,000 people received steroid shots contaminated with that fungus that can cause the deadly disease. the medication has been recalled in 23 states. the outbreak has sickened 105 people all across the country. a contest to win a python at a pet store turned deadly in florida. yesterday, a 32-year-old man who won the competition by eating dozens of cockroaches quickly started vomiting. he lost consciousness and then taken to the hospital where he later died. almost like a fear factor.

none of the other contestants experienced any medical issues. an autopsy will determine that man's cause of death later today. checking "your world this morning" a scientist with the cal connection shares the nobel prize for physics. american david wine lynn got his undergrad degree at uc- berkeley in 1965. he and a frenchman won the physics prize today for inventing and developing methods for observing tiny quantum particles without destroying them. both winners are 68 years old. security in athens is tight this morning as german chancellor angela merkel visits for talks with greece's prime minister. protestors camped out near the greek parliament overnight. they are upset over the strict austerity measures the government has put in place to secure a bailout. the biggest contributor to the greek rescue fund is germany. the united nations is revising its report about how many people in the world are hungry. it blames flawed methodology and poor data for its 2009

report that one billion people were hungry while the revised number 870 million. the change is in the new state of food and security report. in this morning's healthwatch on this tuesday, there may be a link between exposure to mercury during pregnancy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children. a new study looked at 400 children and found an increased risk of adhd behavior in children whose mothers had high mercury levels. some fish including fresh tuna and swordfish tend to have higher levels of mercury. and losing weight with a group can work with or without a health professional leading the effort. the nih funded new research comparing professionally delivered group weight loss treatment to peer-led groups such as weight watchers. study found both groups lost weight but people in peer-led treatment lost a little more. alaska airlines says its flights are running close to normal after a fiberoptic
